Healing ourselves on an emotional level is an incredibly important practice. Self-healing can look like many different things and could take minutes, days, weeks, months, or even years. But one thing is certain: it’s an evolving process that can incorporate many different techniques, medications, and therapies.

It’s good to remind yourself that physical health issues are tied to your emotional self, and while it’s important to seek out western medicine for a lot of the issues involving both physical and mental health, it can be equally as important to know yourself physically, mentally, and sometimes spiritually. Finding a way to connect to yourself can benefit emotional and physical healing in meaningful and often life-changing ways.

I have overcome many things. When I was younger I denounced spirituality and spiritual practice because of trauma. Now that I’m older and have worked through those heavy emotions, I’ve sunk deep into my spiritual self and started to use this connection to heal myself and those around me. Don’t get me wrong, I worked through a lot of my trauma with doctors and psychiatrists to get to a point where I could once again self-empower through spirituality. Taking medications, going to therapy, and having doctor appointments in no way takes away from the spiritual experience. Seeking medical help for physical and mental health issues is just another tool to help heighten your connection to yourself, the physical world, and the spiritual world.

For me, healing is an evolution of self. As my life changes so do I, and so does my attention to self. There are many different techniques to heal yourself through spirituality, but one way that is easy for beginners and experienced people alike is divination. Divination can be done through cards, tea, scrying, quiet mediation/connection to spirit, and many other ways. The practice of divination is about what’s easily accessible to you and what you want your practice to look like, without appropriating other cultures that do not belong to you.

It can be difficult to tackle every issue all at once. If you’re struggling with self-acceptance or experiencing the mother wound you’re probably not looking to connect deeply with your ancestors at this time, and that’s ok. It can be helpful to start from a place where you focus on yourself. It’s ok to take your time and get comfortable with loving yourself. It’s important to make room for healing and self-nurturing.

Something I like to do in my daily self-love practice is using tarot cards (or oracle cards) for insight into my healing process. In the morning with my breakfast or tea, I like to ask my guides (you may choose to connect to whoever feels right for you) “what energy can I bring into my day that will be in my highest and best interest?” and then I proceed to pull tarot (or oracle) cards. This technique is also helpful when I’m facing difficulties. Instead of asking my guides about the energy I can bring into my day, I ask them “What can I do to overcome this issue?” and again I pull cards and reflect on them. I focus on releasing negative qualities the cards may be asking me to let go of. I try to surrender myself to the path my guides are asking me to walk. To help myself understand these issues I write down the details of my reading in a journal and reflect on both the reading and my own perspective through quiet mediation and writing.

This type of self-reflection and spiritual connection can be scary for some people, but when practiced from a place of self-love it can also be a freeing and transformative experience. The trick is to relax your mind and body and protect your energy. It’s important to remember to take all the time you need with your own self-healing journey.
